Venture: Journey to Carpathia is a
turn-based strategy game where you compete for resources, points, and territory.

I was the producer for Venture: Journey to Carpathia. The game started as a passion project between a friend and myself, but when the opportunity to present it at PAX 2020 came up, we recruited four other team members to make that come true. Due to COVID-19, all of the development for this project was remote. This on top of our eight weeks allotted for the completion of the project, presented many challenges we overcame as a team.

Venture: Journey to Carpathia

One of the largest contributing factors to our success was that I had the team adopt a Scrum development workflow in one-week sprints. Utilizing Jira, I created a way that the members of the team could track their tasks, see other member’s tasks, work slated to be on the next sprint, and the backlog of work that is yet to be started or scheduled. We also utilized a Confluence space, in which I kept meeting notes, naming convention documents, export instructions for the 3D artist, and other technical documentation.

Jira Certification

To help enhance my ability to be a Producer, I learned Jira outside of school. I started with their free training programs and am now in the process of completing their “Managing Jira Cloud Projects” Certification.

I also use Jira in just about every project that I am a Producer on since I have found that it is effective in tracking multiple disciplines during the development of complex games.

About Me

I have been interested in Game Development since creating my first mod in Skryim with some friends. After I got out of the military, I started work at a motion capture stage in Los Angeles. After working with different development teams, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in game development.

Once I started school, I naturally fell into the role of Team Lead or Producer for every team project due to my experience leading in the Marine Corps and my industry knowledge through motion capture. Even though there is no producer track at Lake Washington Tech, I decided to foster my professional development through taking Jira Certification courses.

Always eager to learn, I have been taking a wide variety of classes at Lake Washington Tech so that I have a basic knowledge of all disciplines used in the development of video games.
